Honestly — it depends on your project. Payload wins when your team lives in React and Next.js: the admin is React, v3 installs inside your Next.js app, and it's self-hosted with no per-seat fees. But Contentful, Sanity, or Strapi can be the better call for other setups, and we build on all of them. Part of our discovery process is helping you pick the platform that actually fits, not the one we'd rather sell.

Yes — better than almost any other CMS. Payload v3 installs directly inside a Next.js application, so the CMS and the frontend share one codebase and one deploy. Building and integrating Payload with Next.js is our bread and butter as a frontend-focused agency.

Payload is open-source and free to self-host — there are no license or per-seat fees for the core CMS. Your real costs are infrastructure (hosting and a Postgres or MongoDB database) and the development work to build and maintain your project.
